Project: Boo Hat
Date: July 31, 2003 - August 2, 2003
Summary:
Wendy made a hat in November 2002 that was worn to the NYC Burningman Decompression
party in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The hat consisted of a dozen Ultra-Violet LEDs. The
LEDs had been obtained from Hong Kong. They came way too late for burningman
that year, but we really wanted to use them for something. Interesting side
note about the LEDs they charged me by the gram for them. The guy was too lazy
to count them all out, so he weighed them and 30g was about $80 or 100count
of UV LEDs. At the time this was a super-duper deal.
Wendy came up with the idea of wearing UV facepaint and having hats that illuminated
the paint on our face. She created a hat and did all the soldering/wiring herself.
One of the complaints from her at the end of the night was that she wanted the
lights to blink.
Fast forward nearly one year. I decided making this hat blink would be a fun
PIC project for me. I had already programmed 16F84 PICs before and made PCBs.
I just wanted to see how quickly I could crank out a simple PCB. The whole project
went very fast. Within three days I was done.
